Train the Trainer - Hiking in Spain

Safety in Outdoor Experiential Education in Spanish Nature

Safety in Outdoor Experiential Education in Spanish Nature

What's it all about?

Safety in Outdoor Experiential Education in Spanish Nature is a one-week professional development programme, taking place in the mountains north of Madrid in close cooperation between the Institut für Erlebnispädagogik and Madrid Outdoor Education. It is designed for trainers, facilitators and educators who want to work with their own target groups and who want to deepen their understanding of psychological and physical safety in group processes.

Over the course of the week, participants will engage with methods, tools and theories of experiential education for group building and group development, and will explore in depth what psychological and physical safety in group processes means – both in the role of the facilitator and in the organisation of safe group activities. The training combines theoretical input with hands-on experience: a self-organised, multi-day hiking expedition in the Spanish mountains serves as the real-life action in which participants take on responsibility themselves and can test, experience and reflect on psychological and physical safety at first hand, before transferring what they have learned to their own practice.

  • Develop Skills in Outdoor Education: Gain practical knowledge and techniques to integrate nature-based activities into your training repertoire, with a specific focus on how to use those skills with (youth) groups.
  • Deepen Psychological and Physical Safety: Explore what psychological and physical safety in group processes mean, in theory and in practice, and experience firsthand — as a participant yourself — how safety, challenge and resilience interact within a group.
  • Foster Social Learning: Discover strategies for using group dynamics, including a multi-day hiking expedition, to promote teamwork, communication and social skills in natural settings.
  • Connect with Nature: Cultivate a deeper appreciation and connection to the natural environment, encouraging participants to respect and engage with nature.
  • Learn Hiking as an Educational Method: Get to know hiking as a method in its own right, and understand how to use it purposefully and pedagogically with your own groups.

The week begins with the arrival of trainers and participants, followed by a phase of getting to know each other in which basic methods from the field of experiential education help the group grow together, while at the same time introducing participants to the theory behind these methods – building a shared understanding of how and why we work the way we do. In preparing for the upcoming expedition, we then take a deeper look at psychological and physical safety, exploring their relevance for participants’ own work with groups, alongside the practical organisation of what lies ahead. At the heart of the week is a two-day hiking expedition into the Spanish mountains, including a night spent in a shelter, in which participants step out of their comfort zone, take on responsibility for the group, and engage directly with questions of physical and psychological safety, leadership and personal growth. The final days are dedicated to a structured evaluation of the expedition, hands-on facilitation practice, and a harvest time in which insights are gathered and made transferable to participants’ own work, before the programme closes with a shared celebration of the learning and a last evening together.

The whole week is shaped not only by professional and methodological learning, but also by strong elements of personal development. Reflection phases, facilitated feedback, and peer exchange run throughout the programme, ensuring that participants leave with practical skills, personal growth, and confidence to implement experiential education in their own contexts.

We invite participants from the fields of youth work, facilitation, group training, and (non-)formal education—whether in schools or adult education, including teachers and social workers. Ideal participants should have a foundational understanding of action-based learning and possess basic knowledge of group dynamics, as well as an affinity for the outdoors.

This seminar is perfect for those looking to enhance their practical skills in the outdoors while applying and expanding their expertise in teamwork, cooperation, and effective communication as well learning theoretically and practically about the method of hiking with groups in order to apply it in their own educational context.

Feel free to contact us for further information.

  • have a hands-on outdoor experience on a self-organised hiking expedition in the Spanish mountains

  • learn new facilitation and training tools
  • facilitate segments of the expedition yourself
  • learn to deal with challenges in a sustainable manner
  • learn to stay professional & perform even when out of your comfort zone
  • handle unexpected situations as a facilitator & co-facilitator

Accomodation

Throughout the week, we will be based at El Colladito, a youth-hostel-style house in Miraflores de la Sierra (https://miraflores.elcolladito.com), in the mountains just north of Madrid. The house offers simple, comfortable group accommodation together with indoor spaces suited to our seminar content – rooms for theory input, group work and reflection – as well as direct access to the outdoors, with the Sierra de Guadarrama right on its doorstep. This combination allows us to move fluidly between indoor sessions and outdoor practice throughout the programme. The hiking expedition itself will take place in the nearby mountain range, including one night spent in a shelter up in the mountains – the most basic, and for many the most memorable, part of the week. The Team

The seminar house part of the week and the overall design of the programme are led by two experienced trainers, Szilárd and Tim, who bring their background in experiential education and group facilitation to the theoretical input, the safety-focused sessions, and the facilitation practice throughout the week. For the hiking part, they are joined by the team of Madrid Outdoor Education, professional mountain guides who take the lead on the expedition and bring their expertise in the local terrain and outdoor risk management. All of them are already looking forward to meeting the group and are excited to work together with you throughout the week.
